Pietra Leccese – yellow sandstone of natural origin

Pietra Leccese (in the Salento dialect Leccisu) is a famous and historic marly calcarenite/natural limestone quarried almost exclusively in the basins of Salento, particularly in the territories of Lecce, Cursi, Maglie and Melpignano (Puglia), Italy. It represents the absolute symbol of Lecce Baroque architecture, famous worldwide for the extraordinary ductility that has allowed the creation of facades, capitals and carvings of extreme decorative richness.

Visually, it has a warm, bright and homogeneous chromatic background in shades of straw yellow, pale honey, ivory and cream, which tends to acquire a characteristic and fascinating golden patina over time with exposure to air. Its texture is fine and compact, sometimes punctuated by the presence of small marine microfossils embedded in the matrix

Technical characteristics of the Lecce Stone

Geologically it is a sedimentary rock of organogenic origin with a carbonate matrix (composed of over 90-95% calcium carbonate and calcitic cement). As a carbonate stone, it is highly sensitive to food and chemical acids (such as lemon, vinegar, wine, and anti-limescale detergents) and is characterized by high natural porosity. As soon as it is extracted from the quarry, it is extremely tender and easy to carve or sculpt, then tends to progressively harden in air. For safe use in contemporary architecture, it requires adequate hydro-oil-repellent and stain-protective treatment, to be cleaned exclusively with non-aggressive neutral detergents.

Applications in design

– interior cladding and accent walls: an ideal choice for creating vertical scenic walls in salons, hotel lobbies, living areas, and exposed walls with high decorative value.

– fireplace surrounds and furnishing accessories: widely used for period or minimalist fireplaces, consoles, illuminated niches and custom furnishing elements.

– traditionally inspired interior flooring: used for interior floors in brushed, sanded or hand-antiqued finishes (after suitable protective sealing).

– exterior architecture and restoration: widely used in the conservative restoration of historic buildings, in the construction of portals, courtyards and vertical cladding in temperate climates.
