Picture Stone is a natural siliceous sandstone in South Africa, famous for its surfaces that look like natural paintings of dunes, deserts, and hills. It has a warm background in shades of sand, ochre, cream and hazelnut, crossed by fluid streaks in shades of rust, burnt brown and terracotta. Being composed of quartz granules with a siliceous matrix, it is an acid-resistant material and is not damaged by substances such as lemon, vinegar or wine. It boasts excellent scratch resistance, but due to the granular structure typical of sandstones it requires suitable hydro-oil-repellent treatments to prevent liquid absorption. In interior architecture it is ideal for accent walls, scenographic vertical cladding, open-spot compositions and custom furnishing elements of great artistic value.
Geologically, it is a clastic sedimentary rock (siliceous sandstone) formed by the natural cementation of siliceous matrix quartz grains. Unlike carbonate materials, it is an acid-fast material and is NOT sensitive to food and chemical acids (such as lemon, vinegar, wine, or common detergents). It offers good surface hardness and strong structural stability. Due to its clastic and elastic nature, it has the porosity typical of high-quality sandstones: it therefore requires appropriate hydro-oil-repellent treatments to eliminate liquid absorption and enhance the sharpness of its colors. It lends itself beautifully to smooth, brushed or natural finishes.
