Onyx Arco Iris Cross Cut (also known as Arco Iris Onyx, Rainbow Onyx, or Rainbow Onyx) is a magnificent and exotic natural limestone onyx mined in select basins in Latin America (with renowned deposits in Mexico) and the Middle East. The wording “Cross Cut” (counterfidious or pitched cut) indicates that the block is sawn parallel to the layering planes, transforming the typical linear bands into a fluid, flowery and highly scenographic design.
Visually, it features a translucent and vibrant background characterized by a spectacular color palette: halos, clouds and concentric circles in shades of golden yellow, honey, amber, light green, rust and pale pink. The semi-transparent nature of its chalcedonic and calcitic minerals makes this material one of the most spectacular when backlit with LED, transforming the plates into true luminous works of art.
Geologically it is a sedimentary rock of chemical origin (calcareous onyx/alabaster) with a carbonate matrix. It is characterized by a microcrystalline structure with excellent translucency properties. Being a carbonate matrix material with reduced surface hardness, it is extremely sensitive to acids (such as lemon, vinegar and wine) and susceptible to scratches. It requires specific protective treatments, gentle maintenance, and careful choice of intended use, favoring high-quality decorative contexts over surfaces subject to heavy mechanical or chemical wear.
