Egyptian Alabaster (also marketed as Egyptian Onyx, Yellow Onyx, or Yellow Alabaster) is one of the most legendary and evocative natural stones in the history of architecture and sculpture, quarried along the Nile Valley in Egypt.
Visually, it stands out for its extraordinary and extremely high translucency and a warm, vibrant and sunny colour palette. The background ranges from honey yellow to golden, from light brown to amber, and is crossed by delicate concentric zonatures, fluid streaks and clouds in shades of ivory, cream and hazelnut. When cut floppy or counter-floppy, the material reveals chromatic layers of incredible visual depth, capable of filtering and diffusing warm light with an almost hypnotic effect.
Geologically, it is a calcareous sedimentary rock formed by the precipitation of calcium carbonate from thermal waters. It has a natural vacuolar porosity that requires grouting and protective treatments to prevent fluid absorption. Having a carbonate matrix, it is not chemically inert and is sensitive to the opacifying action of acidic substances. Nonetheless, it offers remarkable compactness and excellent mechanical and frost resistance, ensuring extraordinary durability over time both indoors and outdoors.
