Alabaster Cotognino – yellow onyx of natural origin

The Cotognino Alabaster has a thousand-year history inextricably linked to Egypt, where it was mined since the time of the Pharaohs in the Beni Suef region (Nile Valley). The Romans imported it in huge quantities to Rome to decorate temples and imperial palaces, before later locating small local deposits in Italy.

Visually, it has a strongly translucent, layered and pictorial structure. The background develops in warm and enveloping tones ranging from amber yellow to honey brown, up to hazelnut and caramel, and is crossed by concentric zonatures, fluid veins and intense parallel bands in cream, ivory and burnt brown tones. Its natural ability to let light pass through gives surfaces unparalleled visual depth and scenic brightness.

Technical characteristics of the Alabaster Cotognino

Geologically, it is a calcareous sedimentary rock formed by the precipitation of calcium carbonate from thermal waters. It has a natural vacuolar porosity that requires grouting and protective treatments to prevent fluid absorption. Having a carbonate matrix, it is not chemically inert and is sensitive to the opacifying action of acidic substances. Nonetheless, it offers remarkable compactness and excellent mechanical and frost resistance, ensuring extraordinary durability over time both indoors and outdoors.

Applications in design

– luxury backlit walls: Thanks to its extraordinary translucency, it is the excellent material for creating artfully backlit scenic walls in hotel lobbies, spas, boutiques and private residences.

– fine interior paneling and inlays: used for large-plate vertical paneling, wood paneling, and high-artistic furnishing details.

– decorative and liturgical elements: historically used for the creation of altars, cibors, decorative fountains, vases, sculptures and designer lampshades.

– master bathrooms and furnishings: ideal for covering accent walls in bathroom spaces and for creating highly prestigious vanity tops or coffee tables.
