Luserna Stone – white quartzite of natural origin

The Luserna Stone is a stone material symbolizing Piedmontese architectural tradition, extracted exclusively in the Cottian Alps basin, between the Pellice Valley and the Po Valley, in Italy. Aesthetically, it has a very characteristic lamellar structure, defined by a light grey colour tending towards greenish or bluish, enriched by golden reflections due to the presence of mica.

Its natural surface is enlivened by irregular streaks and small bright plaques that give it a rustic yet extremely elegant appearance. It is the stone that designed the face of Turin, from 19th-century porticoes to historic squares, and is appreciated in contemporary design for its ability to evoke the strength and solidity of the Alpine mountains through a sober and versatile color palette.

Technical characteristics of the Pietra di Luserna

Technically, the Pietra di Luserna is a gneiss of metamorphic origin with exceptional mechanical properties, with a hardness ranging between 6 and 7 on the Mohs scale. It is an extremely compact material, resistant to bending, wear and, above all, frost and thermal changes, thanks to its very low porosity. Its schist structure allows it to be easily split into thin but very resistant slabs, making it unique in its versatility. It can be worked with different finishes: the “natural split” surface enhances its material texture, while flaming, brushing or sanding soften its tones, making it suitable even for the most refined interiors, where it guarantees practically unlimited durability.

Applications in design

Perfect for:

– external and road pavements: thanks to its natural non-slip property and resistance to salt and frost, it is ideal for squares, sidewalks and driveways.

– facade and roof coverings: traditionally used as “lose” for Alpine roofing, today it covers modern buildings ensuring insulation and protection from the elements.

– stairs and sills: its robustness makes it the superior technical choice for structural elements subject to heavy wear and mechanical stress.

– interior design and kitchen countertops: in brushed or sanded variants, it transforms into a sophisticated surface for kitchens and bathrooms that seek a material connection with nature.
