Crystal Onyx is the symbol of absolute transparency in the world of natural stone, an elite material quarried from the famous quarries of Pakistan. Unlike Brazilian quartzites, Pakistani onyx is a chemical sedimentary stone of extraordinary purity, formed by the precipitation of spring waters rich in calcium carbonate.
Aesthetically, it presents a milky white or ice-like background, sometimes veering towards shades of ivory or very pale honey. Its main characteristic is its profound crystalline clarity: the mineral structure is so pure and compact that the slab appears to be composed of candied sugar or eternal ice. The veining is generally very subtle, almost imperceptible, ranging from pearl grey to golden amber, and tends to ‘float’ within the vitreous mass rather than remain on the surface, creating a three-dimensional depth effect that is unique in the world.
From a technical perspective, Onyx Cristallo is one of the most diaphanous and translucent natural materials in existence, allowing light to pass through the stone with almost no refraction. As it is a very fine-grained calcareous onyx, it has a hardness of around 3 on the Mohs scale, making it a soft material that is susceptible to scratches, abrasions and acidic substances such as lemon, vinegar or perfumes. However, its structure allows for extraordinary mirror-like polishing, which enhances its vitreous brilliance and transparency, making it the undisputed king for projects involving the integration of internal lighting systems within the stone.
