Breccia Medicea is a polychrome natural stone of extraordinary historical and decorative value, quarried in Versilia, in the marble basin of the Apuan Alps. It is distinguished by an extremely lively ‘breccia’ structure, where fragments of marble of various sizes and colours are cemented together by a dark or reddish natural matrix.
Its colour palette is a celebration of shades ranging from pinkish white to grey, from dark violet to warm ochre and orange veins. This visual richness makes it one of the most theatrical stones in the Italian stone landscape, historically chosen to decorate the most prestigious palaces in Florence and Rome. Each slab is a chaotic yet harmonious natural mosaic, capable of evoking the magnificence of Renaissance courts. Using Breccia Medicea today means incorporating not only a luxury material into a project, but a true fragment of Italian art and architectural history.
Breccia Medicea is a metamorphic limestone marble characterised by a heterogeneous composition that requires the highest level of craftsmanship. Its complex structure, resulting from the union of clasts of varying hardness, allows for a glassy polish that enhances the depth of colours and chromatic contrasts. Being a natural breccia, it may have small pores or micro-fractures on the surface, which are regularly repaired during production. It is a material that is sensitive to acids and therefore requires specific protective treatments to preserve its beauty.
