Rouge Griotte – red marble of natural origin

The Rouge Griotte is one of the rarest, most famous and fascinating historical red marbles in France, quarried in the renowned basins of the Pyrenees region (particularly in the Hérault and Pyrénées-Orientales areas). So named for its characteristic color that recalls the “griotte” cherry variety, it represents a legendary ornamental stone, historically favored by the French nobility and used for the most prestigious decorations in the Palace of Versailles and in European royal palaces.

Visually, it presents an unmistakable and intense background matrix in shades of dark cherry red, black cherry, burgundy and amaranth, embellished with a characteristic texture of small spherical and fossil nodules (goniatites and ammonites) in shades of bright red, antique pink and pure white.

Technical characteristics of the Rouge Griotte

Geologically it is a sedimentary/metamorphic rock (nodular ammonite limestone) with a predominantly carbonate composition (calcite). Being a strictly carbonate matrix material, it is highly sensitive to food and chemical acids (such as lemon, vinegar, wine, juices and anti-limescale detergents) and is subject to immediate clouding or corrosion when exposed to acidic substances. It has excellent compactness and a dense structure; nevertheless, the presence of the complex fossil and veined texture makes the usual vacuum resining and back screening processes appropriate during slab processing.

Applications in design

– luxury vertical flooring and cladding: a top-notch choice for interior flooring, skirting, cornices, and wall cladding in historic residences, period buildings, and high-end state rooms.

– bookmatch compositions: the unique contrast between the light fossil nodules and the black cherry background enhances the mirrored pose for scenographic walls of strong artistic value.

– designer bathroom and vanity top rooms: widely used for scenic vanity tops, shower walls and bathtub linings (after applying appropriate stain-resistant treatments).

– furnishing elements and art inlays: perfect for making table tops, console tables, monumental portals, colonnades, marble art inlays and classic fireplace coverings.
