Rouge Antique – red marble of natural origin

The Rouge Antique is actually one of the most famous and prestigious historical red marbles in France, extracted mainly in the renowned stone basins of the Occitanie region (in southern France) and historically used for the decoration of the Palace of Versailles and the main French noble palaces. Celebrated in classical, monumental and palatial architecture for its regal chromatic saturation, it represents an ornamental stone of immense historical charm and the highest scenographic refinement.

Visually, it is characterized by an intense, dark and deep background matrix in shades of blood red, burgundy, amaranth and purple, densely furrowed and embellished with an elegant network of veins, brecciations and calcareous branches in shades of pure white, ivory, antique pink and pale grey.

Technical characteristics of the Rouge Antique

Geologically it is a metamorphic/sedimentary rock (brecciated limestone) with a predominantly carbonate composition (calcite). Being a strictly carbonate matrix material, it is highly sensitive to food and chemical acids (such as lemon, vinegar, wine, juices and anti-limescale detergents) and is subject to immediate opacification or corrosion when exposed to acidic substances. It has excellent compactness and good structural density; however, due to its complex brecciated nature and natural grain, the slabs benefit greatly from traditional vacuum resin and back screening treatments during processing.

Applications in design

– luxury vertical flooring and cladding: an excellent choice for creating interior flooring, skirting, cornices, and wall cladding in historic residences, period buildings, and top-of-the-line hotels.

– bookmatch compositions: the strong definition of the light-veined lattice on the purple background enhances the mirrored pose for the creation of scenographic accent walls in salons and state lobbies.

– designer bathroom and vanity top rooms: widely used for scenic vanity tops, shower walls and bathtub linings (after applying suitable stain-resistant protective treatments).

– elements of classic architecture and design: perfect for making tops for dining tables, consoles, monumental portals, columns, art inlays and cladding for classic and traditional fireplaces.
