Classic French Red is one of the most famous, historic and prestigious red marbles in Europe, mined in the renowned mining basins of Languedoc and Montagne Noire in southern France. Celebrated since Roman times, used extensively during the reign of Louis XIV in the palaces of Versailles and a constant protagonist of Baroque and Neoclassical architecture, it represents an undisputed symbol of opulence and decorative nobility.
Visually, it is characterized by a dramatic and enveloping brecciated structure: on a background in shades of bright red, burgundy, black cherry and sienna, a dense and lively intertwining of patches, nodules and calcareous veins develops in shades of pure white, cream, pink and light grey.
Geologically it is a metamorphic/sedimentary rock (brecciated limestone) with a predominantly carbonate composition (calcite). Being a strictly carbonate matrix material, it is highly sensitive to food and chemical acids (such as lemon, vinegar, wine, juices and anti-limescale detergents) and is subject to immediate clouding or corrosion when exposed to acidic substances. It has a fair amount of compactness and good mechanical strength; however, its brecciated nature and frequent calcitic grain make traditional vacuum resin and back-screening processes essential during sheet processing.
