Rosso Bilbao is a historic and very elegant natural marble extracted in the mining basins of Spain (particularly in the Basque Country region, near Bilbao). Celebrated in classical and European architecture for its warm deep tones and its sober and balanced design, it represents an ornamental stone of great tradition and refined aesthetic value.
Visually, it presents an intense background matrix in tones of coral, terracotta, burgundy and brick, enriched by a fine lattice of veins, brecciations and small calcitic intrusions in tones of ivory white, pale pink and cream. The uniform distribution of shades and compact micro-granulometry gives surfaces a warm, deep and highly harmonious appearance.
Geologically it is a metamorphic/sedimentary rock with a predominantly carbonate (calcite) composition. Being a strictly carbonate matrix material, it is highly sensitive to food and chemical acids (such as lemon, vinegar, wine, juices and anti-limescale detergents) and is subject to immediate opacification or corrosion when placed in contact with acidic substances. It has a fair hardness and good mechanical strength; however, the natural limestone grain benefits from the usual resin and back-screening treatments when working slabs.
