Rosso Asiago (or Rosso Verona) is one of the most iconic and historically renowned Italian red marbles in the world, quarried in the prestigious basins of the Asiago Plateau and the Venetian Prealps in Italy. Celebrated from classical architecture to contemporary design for its unmistakable nodular materiality and warm earth tones, it represents a symbol of excellence in the Venetian and Italian stone tradition.
Visually, it is characterized by a peculiar and harmonious brecciated-nodular structure: on a background in shades of terracotta red, brick, burgundy and rust, a dense mosaic of calcitic nodules and clasts develops in shades of pale pink, antique orange, cream and ivory white. The jagged rhythm of the nodules gives the surfaces an extraordinary three-dimensionality and a sober elegance.
Geologically it is a nodular limestone (Rosso Ammonitico) with a predominantly carbonate composition (calcite). Being a strictly carbonate matrix material, it is highly sensitive to food and chemical acids (such as lemon, vinegar, wine, juices and anti-limescale detergents) and is subject to immediate clouding or corrosion when exposed to acidic substances. It boasts a fair amount of compactness and good mechanical performance; however, its nodular nature and the presence of stylolites or veins benefit from the usual resin and back-screening treatments during sheet processing. For use in indoor environments prone to stains or humidity, it requires proper protective hydro-oil-repellent sealing.
