Rosso Alicante is one of the most famous, iconic and appreciated red marbles in the world, extracted in the prestigious mining basins of the province of Alicante, Spain (particularly in the area of La Romana and Monóvar). Celebrated since ancient times and widely used in monumental architecture and contemporary design, it represents an undisputed symbol of Mediterranean elegance and warmth.
Visually, it stands out for its unmistakable background matrix in shades of brick red, terracotta, coral and burgundy, richly and densely traversed by a dense network of irregular veins and thin branches in shades of pure white, ivory and cream. The sharp, ringing contrast between the deep red background and the brilliance of the calcitic veins gives the surface exceptional visual dynamism and unique three-dimensionality.
Geologically it is a metamorphic/sedimentary rock with a predominantly carbonate composition (calcite/dolomite). Being a strictly carbonate matrix material, it is highly sensitive to food and chemical acids (such as lemon, vinegar, wine, juices and anti-limescale detergents) and is subject to immediate clouding or corrosion when exposed to acidic substances. It has excellent compactness and good mechanical strength properties; however, the presence of the marked calcite veins makes the usual vacuum resining and reinforcing back screening processes appropriate during sheet processing.
