Onyx Tiger is a spectacular and exotic natural limestone onyx mined in the renowned deposits of Iran and Turkey. Celebrated in luxury interior architecture for its scratchy and dynamic design, it owes its name to the distinctive striated texture that recalls the tiger’s fur and coat.
Visually, it is distinguished by a warm background in shades of terracotta red, rust, burgundy and burnt orange, densely crisscrossed by parallel streaks, layering and scathing waves in shades of honey yellow, amber, cream, ivory and dark brown. This alternation of high-contrast chromatic bands gives the plates a strong dynamism, depth and an expressive charge of great visual impact.
Geologically it is a sedimentary rock of chemical origin (calcareous onyx/calcareous alabaster consisting mainly of aragonite and calcite). Being a strictly carbonate matrix material, it is highly sensitive to food and chemical acids (such as lemon, vinegar, wine, juices and anti-limescale detergents) and is subject to immediate opacification or corrosion if in contact with acidic substances. It has a low surface hardness and inherent structural fragility, requiring the usual resin and back screening processes during processing. Its characteristic technique of excellence is the marked microcrystalline translucency, which allows light to pass through the stone creating suggestive refractive games.
