Onyx Tanzania Red is a rare and spectacular natural limestone onyx mined in mineral deposits in Tanzania. Celebrated in high-end interior architecture and international interior design for the liveliness of its warm and exotic hues, it represents a material of great scenographic value.
Visually, it is characterized by an intense background matrix in shades of ruby red, terracotta, burgundy and scarlet red, finely traversed by sinuous stratifications, clouds and marked veins in shades of white quartz, ivory, honey and antique pink. The sharp color contrast between the deep red base and the light inclusions gives each plate a fluid movement and extraordinary three-dimensionality.
Geologically it is a sedimentary rock of chemical origin (calcareous onyx/calcareous alabaster with a prevalent composition of aragonite and calcite). Being a stone with a strictly carbonate matrix, it is highly sensitive to food and chemical acids (such as lemon, vinegar, wine, juices and anti-limescale detergents) and is subject to immediate opacification or corrosion in contact with acidic substances. It has a low surface hardness and an inherent mechanical delicacy, requiring the usual resin and back screening interventions during the processing of the sheets.
