Technical characteristics of the Onyx Red

Geologically it is a sedimentary rock of chemical origin (calcareous onyx/calcareous alabaster formed by microcrystals of aragonite and calcite). Being a stone with a strictly carbonate matrix, it is highly sensitive to food and chemical acids (such as lemon, vinegar, wine, fruit juices and anti-limescale detergents) and is subject to immediate opacification or corrosion upon contact with acidic substances. It has a low surface hardness and an inherent structural fragility, which is why the slabs require the usual resin and reinforcement screening on the back. Its outstanding technical characteristic is the extraordinary translucency, which allows light to pass through the thickness of the stone, enhancing its crystalline structure.

Applications in design

– backlit walls: thanks to the strong translucent capacity of the aragonitic matrix, it is the choice of choice for LED backlit scenographic walls in the lobbies of luxury hotels, living areas and wellness centres.

– bar counters and reception desks: used for cladding reception desks, bar counters and lounge areas with very high decorative value.

– bathroom and vanity top d’élite rooms: used for the creation of scenic washbasins, accent shower walls and vertical bookmatch coverings (after appropriate water-oil-repellent sealing).

– furnishing tables and designer inserts: highly sought after for smoking table tops, art consoles, fireplace surrounds, and inlay for custom furnishings.
