Diaspro Sicilia is one of the rarest, most fascinating, and historic ornamental siliceous stones in Italy, traditionally quarried in the Giuliana area and in the Sicani Mountains of Sicily. Celebrated since the Baroque period for its extraordinary chromatic-figurative richness, it has historically been used by master stonemasons to decorate the most prestigious monumental complexes, sacred altars and noble Sicilian residences.
Visually, it presents a dense and spectacular chromatic lattice: on an intense matrix in shades of ruby red, brick, terracotta and burgundy, an intricate inlay of veins, nodules and brecciations develops in shades of yellow ochre, golden yellow, cream, ivory, grey and pure white. This sharp contrast between the chromatically warm base and the geometric inclusions gives the surface a marked three-dimensionality and an almost pictorial appearance.
Geologically it is a siliceous sedimentary rock (jasper very rich in quartz and chalcedony microcrystals, with inclusions of iron oxides). As a material with a dominant silica composition, it is totally acid-resistant and does NOT react with food and chemical acids (such as lemon, vinegar, wine or daily cleaning detergents). It offers a very high surface hardness and an exceptional level of mechanical compactness, accompanied by almost zero porosity. Due to the extreme hardness and clastic-veined nature, sawing and machining require high-precision technologies.
