Brèche de Guillestre is a famous and rare natural brecciated marble of historic French origins, traditionally quarried in the commune of Guillestre, in the Hautes-Alpes department (Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur), France. It is an ornamental stone of great tradition, used since ancient times and in classical French architecture to embellish monumental details and fine furnishings.
Visually, it presents a vibrant and rich fragmentary structure, characterized by a matrix in shades of deep red, burgundy and rust, populated by a dense network of angular clasts and nodules in shades of pink, cream, ivory, pale ochre and light grey. This sharp contrast between the hot matrix and the mineral clasts gives the surface a remarkable three-dimensionality and a marked material elegance.
Geologically, it is a recrystallized sedimentary clastic carbonate rock (limestone-matrix brecciated marble). As a carbonate material, it is highly sensitive to food and chemical acids (such as lemon, vinegar, wine and anti-limescale detergents) and is subject to clouding or staining in contact with corrosive substances. Its heterogeneous texture presents a structural variability between the individual clasts and the bottom, making classical resin and consolidation processes necessary during the slab processing phase. For indoor use, it requires a suitable hydro-oil-repellent protective treatment. It shines beautifully with the mirror-polished finish, but offers a unique material appeal even when sanded or brushed.
