Breccia Pernice is one of the most famous, elegant, and historic natural brecciated marbles in Italy, traditionally quarried in the marble basins of Lessinia and Valpolicella (Veneto), Italy. It takes its characteristic name from the warm hues of its background and clastic texture, which recall the pinkish and tawny plumage of the partridge.
Visually, it is distinguished by a warm, enveloping background in shades of coral red, salmon pink, pale orange and flesh, embellished with a dense network of rounded clasts and nodules in shades of creamy white, ivory and pale pink. The fine stylolitic veining and nuanced variations give the surface extraordinary visual softness and timeless elegance.
Geologically it is a brecciated carbonate rock of sedimentary origin (nodular nodular-brecciated limestone/marble linked to the formation of the Rosso Ammonitico Veronese). As a carbonate matrix material, it is highly sensitive to food and chemical acids (such as lemon, vinegar, wine, and anti-limescale detergents) and is subject to surface opacification or corrosion when exposed to acidic substances or aggressive chemical agents. It has excellent compactness and good compressive strength. To preserve its chromatic beauty and luster intact in indoor environments, it requires an appropriate hydro-oil-repellent protective treatment. It shines beautifully with mirror polishing, but also expresses great warmth with sanding, brushing, or antique/bocciardized finishes.
