Tavel Gris is a high-quality and highly sought-after variety of compact limestone quarried in the stone-quarrying areas of southern France, particularly in the Occitanie region.
Visually, it stands out for its extremely refined, orderly and welcoming appearance. It features a very uniform warm grey or dove-grey background, enriched and enlivened by a dense presence of tiny fossil fragments and millimetre-sized mineral inclusions that are slightly darker or ivory in colour. This fine granular texture lends the stone a natural depth and a subtle character, which breaks up the monotony of artificial greys without detracting from the block’s rigour and visual purity. It is a much-loved material in contemporary architecture and in Northern European-inspired projects due to its ability to imbue spaces with a sense of calm, brightness and understated elegance.
From a geological point of view, Tavel Gris is a sedimentary limestone characterised by excellent structural compactness and a fine, regular grain. It offers good physical and mechanical properties, with high compressive strength and resistance to foot traffic wear. As a limestone, it is slightly sensitive to direct exposure to strong acids, which is why it reaches its full potential in indoor environments or on protected vertical surfaces. It responds beautifully to a matt honed finish and brushing: these finishes enhance its soft tactile feel and highlight the richness of the microfossils, whilst maintaining a velvety surface free from artificial mirror-like reflections.
