Steel Grey – natural grey granite

Steel Grey is an Indian granite that enjoys extraordinary popularity and is widely used in the world of contemporary architecture and interior design; it is quarried mainly in the rich stone-rich regions of the state of Andhra Pradesh.

Visually, it stands out for its extremely compact appearance and its dark, masculine hue, reminiscent of brushed steel or cast iron. Its dark grey or anthracite background is densely interspersed with small crystals, inclusions and mineral ‘flakes’ in various shades of lighter grey, silver and black. Although rich in reflective micro-details that react beautifully to light, this texture maintains excellent overall uniformity and impeccable consistency of tone even on slabs of enormous dimensions, making it the material of choice for those seeking the rigour of minimalism without sacrificing the natural character of raw stone.

Technical characteristics of Steel Grey

From a geological point of view, Steel Grey is a granite (more precisely a monzonite or a gabbro, depending on the petrographic classification) with excellent physical and mechanical properties. It is characterised by extraordinary hardness and a liquid absorption coefficient of virtually zero, properties that make it completely resistant to stains, scratches, intense heat and food acids such as lemon or vinegar. It is unaffected by frost or UV rays, proving to be virtually eternal. Its versatility is best expressed through its surface finishes: a mirror polish enhances the depth and brilliance of its silvery crystals, whilst honed or brushed finishes (leather or caress) create a matt, velvety surface that is extremely pleasant to the touch – a look very much in vogue at present.

Design applications

Perfect for:

– kitchen worktops and counters: it is one of the most widely used materials for worktops in modern kitchens, thanks to its durability and ease of maintenance.

– interior flooring and cladding: ideal for reception areas, offices, showrooms and grand entrance halls where a continuous, hygienic surface that can withstand heavy foot traffic is required.

– bathroom furnishings: highly sought-after for bespoke shower trays, vertical cladding and elegant washbasin tops that contrast beautifully with wooden or metal elements.

– outdoor projects and façades: used for outdoor paving, pool surrounds, steps and cladding on ventilated façades, thanks to its complete resistance to weathering.
