Serizzo – natural grey granite

Serizzo (or Sersc) is one of the most famous, historic and structurally reliable stone materials in the Italian building tradition. Quarried mainly in the valleys of the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (particularly in Val d’Ossola and Val Formazza) and in certain areas of Lombardy (such as Val Masino), it belongs to the large family of gneisses.

Visually, Serizzo stands out for its extremely uniform appearance, characterised by a grey background that can range from lighter, silvery shades to darker, anthracite tones. Its grain is densely dotted with a regular mix of white minerals (quartz and feldspars) and black minerals (biotite), creating a visual texture that is understated, austere and highly textural. It is a stone devoid of disruptive veining, making it perfect for ensuring exceptional aesthetic continuity even on very large surfaces.

Technical characteristics of Serizzo

From a geological point of view, Serizzo is an extremely compact metamorphic rock of granitic composition. This particular origin gives it outstanding mechanical properties, including extraordinary hardness and very high resistance to compression, bending and wear caused by heavy foot traffic. It is a completely frost-resistant material, impervious to temperature fluctuations, acids and the corrosive effects of atmospheric agents – qualities that make it virtually unalterable over time. Its structure lends itself well to any type of surface treatment: whilst polishing and honing darken its tones, enhancing its crystalline lustre, flammé, bush-hammered and natural split finishes highlight its textured roughness, ensuring exceptional anti-slip properties.

Design applications

Perfect for:

– urban and outdoor paving: squares, pavements, footpaths, courtyards and pool surrounds. Its resistance to constant foot traffic and heavy vehicles makes it virtually indestructible.

– Architectural and structural elements: used for the construction of staircases (both internal and external), thresholds, window sills, coping stones for low walls, kerbs and imposing columns.

– facade cladding: widely used in residential and commercial construction for cladding traditional façades and ventilated walls, where it ensures insulation and durability.

– Interior furnishings and worktops: with a polished or brushed finish, it is chosen for kitchen worktops, work surfaces and bathroom cladding in settings with a minimalist, industrial or rustic-modern style.
