Serizzo Scuro Valmassino (often written as Valmasino) is a prized and historic variety of Serizzo quarried specifically in the stone quarries of Val Masino, a stunning side valley of the Valtellina situated in the province of Sondrio, in Lombardy.
Visually, it stands out clearly from other varieties in the same family due to its distinctly dark and deep hue. Its base colour tends towards an intense, almost blackish anthracite grey, against which a dense, fine and regular pattern of white (quartz and feldspars) and black (biotite) mineral speckles is set. Compared to its ‘siblings’ from the Val d’Ossola, Valmassino offers a more pronounced colour contrast and a rigorous, austere elegance, making it highly prized not only for public works and traditional building projects, but also for modern architectural designs seeking a clean, minimalist colour scheme with a strong visual impact.
Geologically speaking, it is a gneiss or granitic gneiss characterised by an exceptionally compact structure and high density. It possesses extraordinary physical and mechanical properties, offering superb resistance to compression, abrasion and continuous foot traffic. Its nature makes it a completely frost-resistant material that remains unaffected by the passage of time, temperature fluctuations and aggressive chemical agents. It responds magnificently to all finishing techniques: flammé and bush-hammered finishes soften its dark tone, creating rough, non-slip surfaces for outdoor use, whilst polishing or brushing bring out its anthracite undertones, enhancing its mineral lustre for indoor spaces.
