Pietra Serena – natural grey stone

Pietra Serena is the quintessential stone symbolising Tuscan architecture and history, quarried mainly in the Firenzuola area, in the Tuscan-Romagnolo Apennines, and historically in the hills of Fiesole and Monte Ceceri. This stone is distinguished by its unmistakable ash-grey colour, a sober, matt and extraordinarily uniform shade.

Its fine, velvety texture is subtly enlivened by tiny flecks of mica that catch the light discreetly. Celebrated by Renaissance masters such as Filippo Brunelleschi, Donatello and Michelangelo, Pietra Serena has shaped the character of Florence (from the colonnades of the Spedale degli Innocenti to the interiors of the Basilica of San Lorenzo). Today, it remains a benchmark in contemporary architecture for its geometric rigour, its intellectual elegance and its ability to convey a sense of calm and noble harmony.

Technical characteristics of the stone

From a geological point of view, Pietra Serena is a sedimentary rock, specifically a sandstone with a predominantly calcite-clay cement. It is easy to work with and has reasonable mechanical strength, qualities which have contributed to its widespread use in sculpture and architectural ornamentation.

As it is a sandstone, it has moderate porosity and is inherently sensitive to constant damp and aggressive atmospheric agents if left unprotected; this is why, for outdoor use, the variety known as ‘Pietra Serena Extradura’ – which is much more compact – is now selected. Indoors, it looks its best with honed or brushed finishes, whilst for outdoor use, flamed, sandblasted or natural split finishes are preferred to enhance its slip resistance.

Design applications

Perfect for:

– architecture and historic restoration: used for the restoration of façades, porticoes, colonnades and cornices of historic buildings and medieval and Renaissance villages.

– indoor and outdoor flooring: widely used in reception halls, high-fashion showrooms and boutiques, as well as for courtyards and sheltered walkways, where its neutral grey enhances the surrounding furnishings.

– Stairs, thresholds and window sills: a great classic in residential and monumental construction, chosen for its clean lines and its solid, orderly visual impact.

– furnishings and design elements: it features in the design of monumental fireplaces and decorated frames, designer tables and furnishings with a minimalist aesthetic.
