Pietra Piasentina – natural grey stone

Pietra Piasentina is an Italian stone of exceptional quality and deep-rooted tradition, quarried exclusively in a narrow strip of the Julian Pre-Alps, in Friuli-Venezia Giulia (in the municipalities of Torreano, Faedis, San Leonardo and San Pietro al Natisone, in the province of Udine).

Visually, it is distinguished by a warm grey background, the intensity of which varies considerably depending on the surface treatment applied. Its elegant and complex texture is animated by subtle, distinct white veins of crystalline calcite and by secondary shades or veins in warm brown tones. Used since Roman times and later celebrated by Palladio in the 16th century, it is now an icon of contemporary design, loved for its understated grandeur and its ability to instil a sense of authentic material luxury.

Technical characteristics of Pietra Piacentina

From a geological perspective, Pietra Piacentina is a sedimentary limestone (an Eocene calcarenite/biosparite) characterised by exceptional compactness and toughness. It boasts an extremely low water absorption coefficient and very high breaking loads, characteristics that make it completely frost-resistant and impervious to weathering and foot traffic wear. Its extraordinary versatility lies in the colour response to processing: it ranges from a very light, almost silvery grey when cut with a saw or sandblasted, to a deep, dark and saturated grey when polished or brushed, allowing different shades to be achieved from the very same block of stone.

Design applications

Ideal for:

– premium flooring and cladding: used both for large squares and historic pavements in a flamed/bush-hammered finish (non-slip), and in interior halls and living areas with a polished or brushed finish.

– bathroom and kitchen fittings: highly sought-after for kitchen worktops, solid-surface sinks and shower trays, thanks to its low porosity and structural strength.

– architectural finishes and doorways: the material of choice for stairs, thresholds, window sills and door and window frames, elements where it guarantees a lifespan of a thousand years.

– design elements and ventilated facades: used for the external cladding of skyscrapers and modern complexes, as well as for decorative objects and bespoke tables.
