Pietra di Stazzema – natural grey stone

Pietra di Stazzema (historically also known as Cardoso di Stazzema) is an Italian stone material of great charm and tradition, quarried in the heart of the Apuan Alps, within the municipality of Stazzema, in Upper Versilia (Tuscany). Visually, it stands out for its unmistakable dark grey colour with deep bluish or ash-grey undertones. Its surface, with a distinctly textured and austere appearance, features a subtle cloud-like pattern and is criss-crossed by fine, lighter veins that lend dynamism to the rock without detracting from its minimalist rigour.

Highly prized since ancient times in traditional Tuscan architecture, today it is the stone of choice for contemporary projects seeking understated, solid luxury that is deeply rooted in the natural character of living stone. Thanks to its extraordinary strength and versatility, it integrates perfectly into both outdoor settings and interior design, lending spaces an atmosphere of refined and timeless grandeur.

Technical characteristics of Pietra di Stazzema

From a geological point of view, Pietra di Stazzema is a metamorphic rock (a schistose sandstone formed from the weathering of ancient granite rocks) closely related to Cardoso Stone. It possesses exceptional physical and mechanical properties: it is characterised by a highly compact structure that gives it extraordinary resistance to compression, foot traffic wear and frost damage. It is resistant to weathering and salt spray, proving virtually unalterable when used outdoors. It lends itself to various finishes: polishing or a ‘leather’ finish soften its dark tones, making it velvety for interiors, whilst natural splitting, flamed or sandblasted finishes enhance its rough texture, ensuring excellent anti-slip properties for outdoor use.

Design applications

Perfect for:

– outdoor flooring and cladding: thanks to its resistance to heavy foot traffic, it is ideal for squares, walkways, terraces and ventilated facades of modern buildings.

– traditional architectural elements: used historically and still today for the construction of staircases, thresholds, window sills, door jambs, windows and monumental portals.

– bathroom and spa furnishings: highly sought-after for shower trays, accent cladding and washbasin tops, where its blue-grey colouring creates intimate and relaxing atmospheres inspired by nature.

– interior design and worktops: it finds its place in design of contemporary kitchens and living spaces for the creation of kitchen worktops, counters and tables with a strong textural and geometric impact.
