Pietra di Matraia – natural grey stone

Pietra di Matraia is an Italian stone material renowned for its noble tradition and understated elegance, historically quarried from the hills of Matraia, a hamlet in the municipality of Capannori, in the province of Lucca (Tuscany).

Visually, this stone stands out for its characteristic light, luminous grey colour, characterised by an extremely fine, regular and compact texture. The surface has a pleasingly uniform appearance, interrupted only by tiny, subtle mineral highlights and shadows that bear witness to its natural authenticity. Much loved since the Renaissance for the architecture of historic villas and palaces in Lucca, today it is widely appreciated in contemporary design for its ability to lend spaces a sense of solid, clean lines, brightness and timeless elegance that blends perfectly with both rustic and minimalist settings.

Technical characteristics of Pietra di Matraia

From a geological point of view, Pietra di Matraia is a sedimentary rock, specifically a very compact variety of boulder sandstone. It boasts excellent physical and mechanical properties, including high resistance to compression, abrasion and wear from foot traffic. One of its most important qualities is its extremely high resistance to frost and temperature fluctuations, making it virtually unalterable when exposed to the elements. It lends itself to a variety of surface treatments: whilst polishing softens its tones, giving it a velvety finish suitable for interiors, traditional treatments such as bush-hammering, flame-texturing or natural splitting enhance its textured roughness and ensure ideal anti-slip properties for outdoor use.

Design applications

Perfect for:

– indoor and outdoor flooring: perfect for courtyards, pavements, terraces and indoor halls, where it ensures great visual continuity and excellent resistance to heavy foot traffic.

– architectural elements: traditionally used for the construction of staircases, thresholds, window sills, door and window jambs, and imposing colonnades.

– street furniture and restoration: the material of choice for the restoration of historic villages, squares and fountains, thanks to its historical significance and its ability to withstand the elements over decades.

– interior design and cladding: used for the creation of fireplaces, feature walls and handcrafted shower trays, where its luminous grey instils a serene and natural atmosphere.
