Pietra del Cardoso is an Italian stone of exceptional prestige, quarried mainly in the Apuan Alps, in the Garfagnana area and in the municipality of Stazzema (Lucca).
This rock is distinguished by its unmistakable dark grey-blue colouring, a deep, understated shade whose intensity may vary slightly depending on the quarry of origin and the individual block. Its texture is brought to life by a subtle cloud-like pattern and fine, lighter veins that run discreetly across the surface. Its textured, elegant and austere appearance makes it a stone much loved by architects and designers for both classic and contemporary projects, capable of imparting a sense of solid naturalness and understated luxury to any setting. Thanks to its versatility and strong visual identity, this stone enhances spaces, combining the austerity of Alpine rock with a sophisticated and timeless modernity.
From a mineralogical and geological perspective, Pietra del Cardoso is neither marble nor granite, but rather a metamorphic rock (specifically, a schistose sandstone) formed through the fragmentation of granitic rocks. It possesses excellent physical and mechanical properties: it is characterised by remarkable compactness, excellent resistance to abrasion, slipping and the destructive effects of frost. Thanks to its composition, it withstands weathering and the wear and tear of time very well. The most popular finishes are honed (which softens the tone), flamed or sandblasted (which enhance the rough texture) and natural split-face.
Perfect for:
– outdoor flooring and cladding: thanks to its exceptional resistance to frost and the elements, it is widely used for squares, walkways, terraces and building façades.
– kitchen worktops and bathroom tops: whilst requiring minimal care with highly acidic substances, its hardness and heat resistance make it an excellent work surface.
– Architectural elements: widely used for the construction of stairs, thresholds, window sills, door jambs and portals, thanks to its ease of working and structural stability.
– Interior furnishings and design: chosen for feature walls, shower trays and designer tables in minimalist or industrial-style settings.
