Basaltina Stone – a naturally occurring grey stone

Basaltina Stone is an Italian stone material of exceptional charm and antiquity, quarried mainly in the volcanic areas of Lazio, near Lake Bolsena.

This natural stone is distinguished by its unmistakable dark grey colour, verging on anthracite, enriched by a finely dotted and micro-porous texture, a direct legacy of its magmatic origin. The understated, rigorous and deeply textured appearance of this stone makes it a true cornerstone of both historic architecture and contemporary design. Its minimalist elegance and chromatic neutrality allow it to harmonise seamlessly with a wide range of materials, from natural wood to exposed concrete and burnished metals, lending spaces a sense of solid stability, authenticity and a discreet luxury rooted in the history of the land.

Technical characteristics of Pietra Basaltina

From a technical perspective, Basaltina stone is an igneous rock of volcanic origin that boasts exceptional physical and mechanical properties. It is characterised by extremely high density, high hardness and outstanding resistance to compression, abrasion and thermal shock. Compared to other natural stones, it offers excellent resistance to acids and weathering, and is completely frost-resistant. It lends itself to a variety of surface finishes: polishing softens its tones, whilst treatments such as flammé, bush-hammered or natural split finishes enhance its rough texture and improve its anti-slip properties, making it safe and durable over time.

Design applications

Perfect for:

– indoor and outdoor flooring: thanks to its resistance to wear and frost, it is ideal for both elegant indoor living rooms and terraces, walkways and public squares with heavy footfall.

– façade cladding: highly prized in the construction of ventilated façades for modern buildings, where it ensures insulation, durability and a clean aesthetic.

– kitchen worktops and bathroom surfaces: its resistance to high temperatures and scratches, combined with its low chemical reactivity, make it an extremely hygienic and high-performance work surface.

– street furniture and staircases: used for creating steps, thresholds, fountains and benches, thanks to its ability to withstand the test of time and the elements without deteriorating.
