Bardiglio – natural grey marble

Bardiglio is one of Italy’s most historic and iconic grey marbles, quarried in the heart of the Apuan Alps in Tuscany. It is distinguished by its deep, cloudy, dark grey background colour, reminiscent of the density of a sky before a storm.

The surface is criss-crossed by a dense network of darker veins, ranging from anthracite grey to black, and occasionally by subtle white lines that create a highly elegant chromatic contrast. Unlike Bardiglietto, which is lighter and more delicate, this material possesses a strong, masculine character, capable of imparting an immediate sense of visual solidity to spaces. It is a stone that symbolises Italian classicism which, thanks to its neutral tone and dynamic texture, has been rediscovered by contemporary design to create spaces with a bold, luxurious and sophisticated character, perfect for those seeking a dark yet vibrant alternative to traditional white marbles.

Technical characteristics of Bardiglio

From a technical perspective, Bardiglio is a fine-grained calcareous marble characterised by high crystalline compactness and a hardness of approximately 3–4 on the Mohs scale. Its mineral density allows for excellent polishing results, ensuring brilliant surfaces that enhance the depth of the grey. Although it is a solid material resistant to compression, it retains its natural sensitivity to acidic products, making appropriate protective treatments necessary to preserve its lustre and colour consistency against wear and moisture.

Design applications

Perfect for:

– striking flooring: used on its own or in combination with light-coloured marbles to create geometric contrasts and classic chequerboard patterns of great prestige.

– bathroom cladding: ideal for showers and accent walls, where its smoky grey hues evoke the atmosphere of a modern, luxurious spa.

– vanity tops and washbasins: its dark colour and dense veining make it perfect for monolithic elements that effectively conceal water marks.

– staircases and cornices: it enhances architectural details with impeccable formal rigour.
