Ardesia Grigia is one of the most iconic natural stones in the Italian quarrying tradition, quarried mainly in the basins of Liguria, between the Fontanabuona Valley and the Chiavarese area. Also known as “Pietra di Lavagna”, this metamorphic rock is distinguished by its unmistakable smoky grey colour, a neutral, deep and velvety shade that conveys a sense of calm and architectural rigour.
Its aesthetic is defined by its typical schistose structure, which allows the stone to be split into thin slabs along natural cleavage planes. This process, known as “natural splitting”, gives the surface a textured and irregular finish, rich in nuances that play with the light. It is an extremely versatile material: whilst rooted in historical and rural tradition, its clean lines and consistent colour have made it an undisputed star of modern design and minimalism, capable of blending harmoniously with warm materials such as wood or cool ones like concrete and steel.
From a technical perspective, Ardesia Grigia is a very fine-grained metamorphic rock with excellent flexural strength and impact resistance. Thanks to its mineralogical composition, it is naturally waterproof and resistant to frost and temperature fluctuations, making it one of the best-performing stones for outdoor use. Its virtually non-existent porosity makes it easy to clean, whilst the split-face finish ensures inherent anti-slip properties. It is a durable material which, if treated correctly, gains character as it ages.

– roofing and roofs: historically used in traditional Ligurian ‘ciappe’ due to its total waterproofing and resistance to extreme weather conditions.

– bathroom tops and shower trays: its water-repellent nature makes it ideal for damp environments, offering a refined, textured spa-like look.
