Antracite – grey granite of natural origin

Antracite is a natural stone, usually classified as granite or schist depending on the specific quarry of origin, which embodies the essence of understated elegance and modern minimalism. Quarried mainly in Brazil or in certain European regions, it is distinguished by its deep dark grey, almost black colouring, which recalls the hue of the coal from which it takes its name.

Its appearance is characterised by a very fine grain and an extremely uniform texture, interrupted only rarely by tiny crystalline specks or faint silver veining that shimmer in direct light. This stone is much loved by designers for its ability to act as a neutral yet characterful element, capable of absorbing light and creating an atmosphere of understated refinement. Unlike veined stones, Anthracite offers impeccable visual continuity, making it the ideal backdrop for showcasing designer furnishings or material contrasts with wood and metal.

Technical characteristics of Antracite

From a technical perspective, Antracite is a material of remarkable density, with a hardness ranging between 6 and 7 on the Mohs scale. Its silicate structure ensures excellent resistance to deep abrasion, thermal shock and acid attack, making it technically superior to marble. Its extremely low porosity prevents the absorption of liquids and the proliferation of bacteria, ensuring a hygienic surface and simplified maintenance even under conditions of intensive and prolonged use.

Design applications

Perfect for:

– kitchen worktops and countertops: thanks to its extreme durability, it is perfect for professional or domestic kitchens with a modern and functional style.

– interior flooring: creates seamless, modern surfaces that conceal dirt well, ideal for high-traffic areas or open-plan lofts.

– exterior cladding: excellent for ventilated facades and thresholds, as it is resistant to frost, UV rays and corrosive atmospheric agents.

– shower trays and bathrooms: in a brushed finish, it offers slip resistance and a contemporary look.
