Titanium Travertine (also marketed as Titanium Travertine, Titanium Brown Travertine, or Titanium Travertine) is one of the most dramatic and sought-after natural stone materials in contemporary architecture, mined primarily in Iran.
Visually, it presents a highly dynamic aesthetic with a very high scenographic impact. The background is characterized by warm, earthy tones ranging from hazelnut brown to chocolate, to mud and dark walnut shades, crossed by marked parallel streaks and veins or cloudiness in shades of titanium gray, anthracite, silver, cream and gold/ochre veins. When cut against the brim (vein-cut), it shows rigid and fascinating layered horizontal lines that recall primordial matter, while the brim cut (cross-cut) gives a softer, more painterly and clouded appearance. The presence of the typical vacuolar cavities of natural stone can be enhanced by leaving the pores exposed for a rough and material effect, or filled with translucent resins or chromatically matched cements.
Geologically, it is a calcareous sedimentary rock formed by the precipitation of calcium carbonate from thermal waters. It has a natural vacuolar porosity that requires grouting and protective treatments to prevent fluid absorption. Having a carbonate matrix, it is not chemically inert and is sensitive to the opacifying action of acidic substances. Nonetheless, it offers remarkable compactness and excellent mechanical and frost resistance, ensuring extraordinary durability over time both indoors and outdoors.
