Travertino Noce in Falda (historically extracted in the quarries of Tivoli and Guidonia, in the province of Rome, Italy) is a famous variant of Roman travertine characterized by its warm, intense brown hues, which recall the color of walnut wood.
The designation “in Falda” refers to the method of cutting rock: the block is sawn parallel to the bedding planes (unlike the cut in the opposite or in the opposite direction), exposing the bedded surface. Visually, this produces a cloudy, soft and homogeneous aesthetic effect, where the ground varying from hazelnut to chocolate brown, up to terracotta tones and dark beige, fades gently without showing the rigid linear grooves typical of the cut against the brim. The texture features the classic pores and vacuoles of karst origin, which can be left open or filled (with cement, mastic or translucent resin) depending on the desired finish.
Geologically, it is a calcareous sedimentary rock formed by the precipitation of calcium carbonate from thermal waters. It has a natural vacuolar porosity that requires grouting and protective treatments to prevent fluid absorption. Having a carbonate matrix, it is not chemically inert and is sensitive to the opacifying action of acidic substances. Nonetheless, it offers remarkable compactness and excellent mechanical and frost resistance, ensuring extraordinary durability over time both indoors and outdoors.
