The Breche Nouvelle (historically also known as Brèche Nouvelle or Brèche du Tholonet) is one of the most prestigious, rare and historically significant brecciated marbles in all of France. It is mined in the evocative region of Provence, specifically near Aix-en-Provence, on the slopes of the famous Sainte-Victoire mountain massif.
Visually it appears as an extremely dynamic polychrome breccia. The background is a fascinating mosaic in which large clasts (rock fragments) of dark grey, brown, hazel and purplish hues join with lighter, almost white or ivory fragments. The natural mosaic is bound by veins and cement lines with warm tones of burnt orange, brick, yellow ochre and red (visible in the chromatic detail of the slab). This exceptional chromatic-geometric richness gives the stone a deeply material, almost expressionist appearance.
Geologically it is a limestone breccia of tectonic-sedimentary origin. Its fragmentary structure requires advanced craftsmanship during the resin and line consolidation phases (standard process for all large historic breccias) to ensure its stability. It responds masterfully to mirror polishing, the workmanship of choice for this marble, capable of saturating the warm tones of red-orange and making the sharp contrasts between the dark and light fragments shine. Being a limestone marble, it is indicated for purely internal use and needs to be protected from direct contact with highly acidic substances.
Perfect for:
– scenographic fireplaces: this is its historical application par excellence; a modern or Breche Nouvelle-clad fireplace immediately becomes the undisputed focal point of any salon.
– “bookmatch” accent walls: thanks to the geometric and energetic design imprinted by nature, the large, specularly laid slabs create visually striking decorative backdrops for living rooms, reception entrances, or retro-receptions.
– tables and design accessories: Highly sought after for creating dinner table tops, entry consoles, and coffee tables, where each section of slab tells a unique geological story.
– elite bathroom details: used for vanity tops or niche and shower wall coverings, where the earthy, Provençal color component dialogues superbly with bronze or burnished brass faucets.
