Baltic Brown – natural brown granite

Baltic Brown is one of the most iconic, historic and recognisable granites in the world. It is mined mainly in the famous and vast geological basins of southern Finland (in the Virolahti region), overlooking the Baltic Sea, from which it takes its name. It is the founder of the famous Rapakivi granite family, ancient igneous rocks formed over a billion years ago.

Visually, it is characterized by a unique and unmistakable coarse-grained texture. The surface has an “orbicle” structure, that is, large ovoid macro-crystals of potassium feldspar of a warm chocolate brown or pinkish-brown color. The true color signature of Baltic Brown is that these brown ovoids are framed and surrounded by a thin quartz and plagioclase border of a gray-green or black hue. This geometric and repetitive alternation creates a three-dimensional design, rigorous and with a very great material impact.

Technical characteristics of the Baltic Brown

Geologically, it is an authentic granite with legendary structural compactness and density. Its mineral composition gives it extreme hardness, placing it at the top of the category for resistance to abrasion, deep scratches and accidental impacts. Having been born in the harsh Scandinavian climates, he is totally insensitive to frost, temperature changes and UV rays. It has almost no porosity, which makes it naturally impermeable and protected from stains, as well as being chemically inert and therefore completely immune to corrosion by food acids. The mirror-gloss finish saturates the hue of the feldspars, while the flamed or brushed workmanship enhances their rough and monumental nature.

Applications in design

Perfect for:

– Traditional and substantial kitchen tops: a timeless classic; they withstand the direct heat of cookware and require no complex maintenance, pairing well with warm woods or classic and contemporary kitchens.

– large floors and stairs: widely used in airports, stations, banks and shopping centres for its ability to withstand continuous trampling without showing signs of wear.

– exterior cladding and ventilated facades: its resistance to atmospheric agents and salt makes it ideal for cladding modern buildings and for street furniture (squares, fountains, curbs).

– building thresholds and finishes: chosen for structural elements that must guarantee eternal durability over the centuries.
