Giallo Vicenza – yellow stone of natural origin

Giallo Vicenza (also marketed under the names Pietra Gialla di Vicenza, Pietra di Vicenza Gialla or Yellow Vicenza Stone) is a famous and historic natural limestone-fossiliferous stone extracted mainly in the Berici Hills extraction basins, in the province of Vicenza (Veneto, Italy). Famous for having characterized the architecture and villas of Andrea Palladio, it is one of the symbolic stones of the Renaissance and the Venetian construction tradition.

Visually, it has a soft, warm and homogeneous background that varies from straw yellow to ochre yellow and golden beige, finely enriched by a characteristic presence of marine microfossils (nummulites and recrystallized shells) that give it the classic material texture and the typical touch sensation of natural living stone.

Technical characteristics of Giallo Vicenza
Geologically it is an organogenic sedimentary rock (bioclastic limestone) formed in the Eocene. Being a predominantly calcitic and porous material, it is chemically sensitive to acidic substances (vinegar, lemon, wine) and is prone to absorbing liquids if left untreated. It has the peculiarity of being relatively tender and workable and then progressively hardening over time in contact with air. It lends itself excellently to smooth, brushed, sandblasted, bush-hammered and hand-chiseled finishes.

Applications in design

– sculpture and historical restoration: stone of choice for classical sculpture, capitals, balustrades, art statues, and restoration work on Palladian villas and listed buildings.

– interior cladding and fireplaces: chosen for the cladding of scenic walls, period fireplace surrounds and rustic-chic furnishing finishes.

– internal and external flooring: used in polished or brushed finishes for interiors and in sandblasted/bocciardized finishes for porticoes and external walkways (subject to suitable hydro-repellentization).

– custom architectural elements: used for the creation of portals, columns, thresholds, sills and window frames.
