Broccatelle – red marble of natural origin

Broccatelle is one of the most famous, valuable and elegant historical ornamental limestone marbles of the European stone tradition. Its name derives from the textile term “brocade”, as its complex and intricate chromatic-veined texture visually recalls the precious gold and silk fabrics of the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
Visually, it presents a rich and vibrant background in shades of rusty red, burgundy, scorched earth and grape marc, richly characterised by a dense inlay of small clasts, organogenic nodules and shades in shades of golden yellow, ochre, cream, ivory and purple. The fragmented yet harmonious distribution of inclusions gives the surface extraordinary depth and a preciously figurative appearance.

Technical characteristics of Broccatelle

Geologically it is an organogenic/brecciated carbonate rock of sedimentary origin (recrystallized ornamental limestone). Being a predominantly carbonate matrix material, it is highly sensitive to food and chemical acids (such as lemon, vinegar, wine, and aggressive anti-limescale detergents) and is subject to clouding or corrosion when exposed to corrosive agents. Its minute and heterogeneous texture presents a natural variability of local hardness; for this reason, resin and micro-consolidation processes are regularly applied during the processing of the sheets.

Applications in design

– accent walls and open-spot compositions: the richness of the geometric motif and the contrasts between the red background and the gold-cream inclusions lend themselves exceptionally to mirrored posing, creating scenographic walls of the highest ornamental value in salons and reception areas.

– Art cabinetmaking and fireplace surrounds: a highly traditional period material for making antique furniture tops, fine furniture consolidation, sculpted fireplaces, pilasters, and portals.

– fine interior flooring and inlays: used for the creation of ornamental floors, marble carpets, inlay paintings, and perimeter bands in historic homes, religious settings, and luxury residences.

– bathroom and vanity top rooms: used for vertical cladding of niches, accent walls and furnishing vanity tops
