Morato (often referred to in historical catalogues as Marrone Morato) is a natural Italian marble of rare elegance and timeless charm. Its name evokes the hue of a ripe blackberry, a term from the Italian colour tradition used to describe a very dark, warm and deep shade that lies between burnt brown and anthracite.
Visually, it is characterised by a compact, enveloping background in shades of dark brown and deep brown, sometimes enriched with smoky grey undertones. The surface is embellished with a delicate pattern of veining and micro-crystallisations in shades of cream, beige and chalky white. This combination creates a understated, measured and geometrically controlled design, ideal for projects seeking understated luxury and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
Technical characteristics of Morato
Geologically, it is a crystalline limestone with a high structural density, formed in Italian sedimentary basins. The rock’s perfect compactness makes it exceptionally well-suited to mirror polishing, a process that brings out the depth of the brown background and enhances the transparency of the light-coloured veins. Like all Italian carbonate-based marbles, it is naturally susceptible to the corrosive effects of acidic foodstuffs (such as vinegar, lemon or wine) and aggressive cleaning agents; for this reason, it requires the application of suitable water- and oil-repellent protective treatments. In addition to the polished finish, it takes on an extraordinarily modern character in the honed or brushed versions, which soften the contrasts to create a matt, silky surface that is pleasant to the touch.
