Iura Grau – brown marble of natural origin

Iura Grau (known internationally as Jura Grau, Jura Grey, or Jura Grigio) is the fascinating color variant of the famous limestone quarried in the basins of Bavaria, Germany. Just like its twin Iura Beige, it is commercially catalogued and worked as marble for its excellent polishing ability, but from a geological point of view it is a unique sedimentary stone, formed in the Jurassic period.

Visually, it stands out for an exceptionally modern and sophisticated color background that ranges from pearl gray to bluish gray, to touch warm dove shades. The surface is a true open-air paleontological archive: it is richly dense with prehistoric marine macro- and micro-fossils (such as ammonites and belemnites) perfectly fossilized in darker shades. This combination creates a layered texture of immense aesthetic value, capable of combining the minimalist rigor of contemporary gray with the warmth of geological history.

Technical characteristics of the Iura Grau

Geologically it is a high density organogenic limestone. The millennial sedimentation process has given the rock a solid, compact structure and excellent mechanical properties, with remarkable resistance to compression, bending and wear from daily trampling. Since it is a stone based on calcium carbonate, it shows the typical sensitivity of marbles to the corrosive action of acidic food substances (such as vinegar, lemon or wine), which can opacify it if not protected by appropriate sealing treatments. It expresses its utmost elegance both in the glossy finish, which saturates the grey background, highlighting the three-dimensionality of the fossils, and in the polished or brushed finish, which gives a matte, silky surface with an exquisitely textured flavour.

Applications in design

Perfect for:

– contemporary flooring and siding: its refined gray hue makes it one of the most sought-after materials for continuous flooring in minimalist lofts, luxury showrooms, and modern villas.

– accent walls and scenic backdrops: used to cover focal walls in hotel salons or lobbies, where details from Jurassic fossils transform surfaces into natural paintings.

– ventilated and external facades: thanks to its excellent structural strength and compactness, it is widely used in architecture for prestigious external cladding and facades, after appropriate antifreeze treatment.
