Rosso Levanto Scuro is one of the most dramatic, elegant, and prestigious red marbles in the Italian stone tradition, quarried in the famous basins of the Riviera di Levante in Italy (particularly in the Levanto and Bonassola district of Liguria). Celebrated in classical, sacred and monumental architecture for its dark chromatic majesty, it represents a material of extraordinary nobility and high scenographic value.
Visually, it is characterised by a very deep and intact background matrix in shades of dark burgundy red, plum, burnt brown and amaranth, densely crossed by a conspicuous network of veins and calcareous branches in shades of bright white, ivory and serpentine dark green.
Geologically it is a metamorphic rock (serpentinite/calcite breach) with a predominantly carbonate composition (calcite) with important fractions of magnesian silicate (serpentine). Being a predominantly carbonate matrix material, it is highly sensitive to food and chemical acids (such as lemon, vinegar, wine, juices and anti-limescale detergents) and is subject to immediate opacification or corrosion upon contact with acidic substances. It has excellent compactness and high density; however, the complex brecciated structure makes the usual resin and back-screening processes recommended during sheet processing to ensure optimal stability.
