Breche de Benou – red marble of natural origin

The Breche de Benou is one of the rarest, most prestigious and scenographic historical brecciated marbles of French origin, traditionally quarried in the Ossau Valley, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department (Nouvelle-Aquitaine), France. It is a stone famous for having been historically chosen by the Sun King for the decoration of the monumental interiors of the Palace of Versailles and the French noble palaces.
Visually, it presents an unmistakable polychrome lattice of exceptional pictorial value: on an intense and rich matrix in shades of olive green, forest green and scorched earth, large clasts and rounded nodules stand out in shades of flesh pink, purplish red, cream and pure white, creating a clear and fascinating chromatic contrast.

Technical characteristics of the Breche de Benou

Geologically, it is a sedimentary/metamorphic clastic carbonate rock (limestone-matrix brecciated marble). Being a predominantly carbonate matrix material, it is highly sensitive to food and chemical acids (such as lemon, vinegar, wine and anti-limescale detergents) and is subject to opacification or corrosion when exposed to acid-corrosive substances. Its complex breccia structure exhibits natural heterogeneity; therefore, when processing slabs, it requires traditional consolidation and resining operations to saturate the microporosity. For indoor use, it requires high-quality hydro-oleorepellent treatment. Shines excellently with mirror polished, brushed or sanded finish.

Applications in design

– accent walls and bookmatch compositions: the pronounced polychromy and the sharp contrast between the pink clasts and the green background make this marble perfect for mirrored installation on the scenic walls of high-end lobbies, salons and rooms.

– fireplace frames and art cabinetmaking: a traditional French choice for sculpting period fireplaces, antique furniture tops, consoles, and entrance portals.

– premium interior flooring: used to make marble carpets, historic inlays, ornamental floors, and edging bands in period homes or luxury residences.

– bathroom and vanity top rooms: used for high-visual vertical cladding, niches and vanity vanity tops (subject to suitable stain-resistant sealing).
